Use Tag to Thread a Financial Story

Why Tags are Awesome?

Unlike categories, tags offer freedom by nature. Whenever an idea or thought comes to mind, you can instantly add a tag to capture it.

Because of their flexibility, the most effective way to use tags is to map them to specific financial stories—real-life events that you want to track closely.

My friend Shaw once told me that his parents-in-law would be visiting in a few months. He’s super excited to share his life with them, but he also wants to keep an eye on how much he’ll spend—on hotels, meals, travel, fun activities, and more.

Categories are not enough for this purpose.

Tag is for Telling a Story

That’s where tags come in.

He created a tag called "in-law-visit", gave it a nice blue color, and started tagging all related transactions alongside their categories.

New Tag

Now, Shaw can easily track every expense tied to the visit—and even add multiple tags to a single transaction when needed.

Tagging Transactions

He told me he thinks the little colored tag icons are “so cute” and loves seeing them in the transaction list. Not sure if he was joking—but honestly, he's right. A touch of color makes financial data feel more lively and fun.

Tagging Transactions

Note: Click a tag icon to filter and view all transactions associated with that tag. It's like opening a mini financial journal, instantly.

Use Tags to Track Your Financial Stories

With tags in place, Shaw can build insightful reporting blocks in a Fina page. By dragging in a few blocks and applying the "in-law-visit" tag, he quickly created a detailed view of all related spending.

Tagging Transactions

Let’s take a look at what Shaw set up (yes, he’s a dark mode fan—I’m a light mode person myself!):

  1. Total spending.
  2. Total spending by category.
  3. Total spending by month - with a little threshold set to $1000.

I'm pretty sure Shaw will have a great time with his in-laws, and he will also have a great time with Fina - thanks to a simple tag.

Tag Accounts

Did you know? Fina accounts can be tagged as well. Assigning a tag to an account helps you group them virtually and filter by tag.

Because of this, the Fina team revamped the account selection flow. Now it’s easier than ever to choose which accounts to include in your page blocks:

Select Accounts

  • By profile – Great if you use Fina’s multi-profile feature
  • By type – Checking, savings, credit cards, loans, or investments
  • By tag – Like kids-accounts, family-accounts, or anything you define

This update has saved me tons of time when building my own financial dashboards. It's awesome.

Conclusion

Tags are a powerful tool in financial tracking. They let you add context and meaning to your transactions, helping you understand your financial story more deeply.

Use them well, and you’ll unlock new insights and make smarter financial decisions.

Happy tracking. Happy tagging.
